Noting the Passing of an Early Pioneer Stewardess




W. Yvonne Riccius (January 17, 1926 - May 1, 2015) W. Yvonne Hicks Riccius passed away on May 1, 2015, at Charlotte, North Carolina after a long illness with Alzheimers. Yvonne was born on January 17, 1926 in Waco Texas. She was the daughter of the late Joe Melvin Hicks and Mary Elizabeth Slaughter. Yvonne graduated from Waco High School in 1943 and went on to the University of Texas at Austin where she obtained her degree. In college, she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. After college she moved to Houston, Texas and became an airline stewardess for Pioneer Airlines which later became Continental Airlines and now United Airlines. Parade Magazine published a pictorial feature story about Yvonne and her stewardess co-workers while she was employed at Pioneer Airlines. Airline stewardesses had a mandatory retirement age of 28 during this time and Yvonne went on to work for the IRS in Austin following her airline retirement. She worked for the IRS for ten years and then moved to the Dallas area, settling in Irving, Texas. In Dallas, she met the love of her life, Merril "Rick" Riccius and they spent over 40 years together traveling to every continent in the world except for Antarctica. Yvonne spent many years in Irving involved in various activities including, The Irving Symphony League, The Las Colinas Womens Association, Irving Book Review, Irving Garden Club, The Golden Penguins (former Continental Stewardesses). Yvonne and her late husband were founding members of the Las Colinas Country Club. She was a member of the same bridge club at Las Colinas for almost 50 years. Yvonne is known for her style and grace which she carried with her every day. She is preceded in death by her husband, Merril "Rick" Riccius. She is survived by her only child, Renee Riccius Mandell and two granddaughters, Merrill Mandell and Meredith Mandell of Weddington, North Carolina. She is also survived by her sister, Iris Loep of Houston, Texas. A service will be held on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 12:30 PM at Donnellys Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, 606 West Airport Freeway in Irving. Burial will be that same day at 2:30 at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. Obituary provided by family members
